Five habits that save money
- Avoid motorway services. Fuel at motorway service areas is usually the most expensive. Leave the motorway for a few minutes or fill up before a long trip.
- Supermarket forecourts are often cheapest. They sell a lot of fuel and use it to bring shoppers in.
- Compare before you go. Prices change daily and differ a lot within the same town. Our petrol prices near me page lists the stations around you, cheapest first.
- Do not drive far for a few pence. A 10-mile detour at 45 mpg burns about a litre of fuel. Saving 3p a litre on a 50-litre fill-up is ยฃ1.50, roughly what that litre costs.
- Drive smoothly. Gentle acceleration, correct tyre pressures and not carrying extra weight often save more than hunting for the cheapest pump.
